GRANDADDY
SumDay   (2003)
Grade:  B+

When I heard of the possibility that Grandaddy’s newest record was going to be a 2-CD affair, I pretty much decided that it was going to blow right then and there.  Double albums are always ridiculously overwrought and pretentious (see Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Fragile, etc.).  So, even when it was trimmed to a single disc, the residual disdain for the album remained with me.  But, I am happy to say, SumDay sheds the uneven, choppy flow of its predecessor, The Sophtware Slump, and shows that Grandaddy is still a force to reckon with in the world of indie rock.  El Caminos in the West and I’m on Standby are highlights, purveying a foundation already laid by Hewlett’s Daughter from ...SlumpSumday will, most likely, be a welcome surprise to those (like me) who thought Grandaddy’s welcome may have been worn out.  It’s a fine album.   -Eric Morris
